Turning Off Automatic Updates Can Put Your Devices at Risk!

A client recently contacted us for help with a Windows computer that had automatic updates disabled. When we inspected the system, we discovered that it had not received an update in several years. Although the computer still appeared to work, it was missing years of important security patches, reliability improvements and software fixes.

This problem is not limited to Windows. Every computer, phone and tablet should be kept updated, regardless of whether it runs Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS.

Software updates do much more than introduce new features. They repair security weaknesses that hackers, malware and ransomware may use to access your device. Once a vulnerability becomes publicly known, outdated devices can become easier targets. Antivirus software can provide additional protection, but it cannot fully compensate for an operating system that is several years behind.

Updates can also improve performance, correct system errors and maintain compatibility with modern applications, websites, printers and other connected devices. An outdated phone or computer may experience crashes, browser problems, failed application installations or difficulty connecting to newer technology.

Some people disable updates because they are concerned about unexpected restarts or previous updates causing problems. While these concerns are understandable, permanently disabling updates creates a much larger long term risk. A better approach is to schedule updates outside business hours, save important work regularly and maintain a reliable backup.

Businesses should take this issue especially seriously. One outdated computer can create a weak point within the entire network. If that device becomes compromised, customer information, business files, passwords and other connected systems may also be placed at risk.
