Why Every NVR Should Be Inside a Secure Enclosure
Secure NVR and Server protection for homes and businesses

Security cameras are one of the most important parts of a modern home or business security system. However, there is one critical component that is often overlooked: the NVR and local server storing the actual recordings and files.
At NerdGuys Technologies Smart Systems, we highly recommend installing your NVR, network equipment, and local server inside a secure, lockable enclosed server box or cabinet, such as a metal enclosure box. Protecting the device that stores the evidence is important!
Why Your NVR Needs Physical Protection
An NVR, or Network Video Recorder, is responsible for storing footage from your security cameras. In many installations, the NVR is simply placed on a shelf, desk, basement rack, utility room cabinet, or beside the internet modem.
During a break in, a thief may notice the security cameras and realize that their actions have been recorded. If the NVR is easily accessible, they can potentially disconnect it and take it with them.
When the NVR disappears, your locally stored security footage may disappear with it.
That footage could have contained critical evidence such as the intruder's face, clothing, vehicle, license plate, entry method, or the exact time the break in occurred.
Local Servers Are Also at Risk
The same concern applies to businesses and homes using an onsite server, NAS, or other local storage system. A local server may contain much more than camera recordings. Depending on the environment, it could contain important business documents, customer files, photos, videos, financial information, security recordings, computer backups, and shared network files.
If a server or NAS is left completely exposed, an intruder may be able to damage or disconnect the equipment. Even with strong passwords, firewalls, and cybersecurity measures, physical security remains an important part of protecting your data.
Adding Another Layer of Security
A secure enclosed server box provides an additional physical barrier around your equipment. A properly installed enclosure can help prevent someone from simply grabbing the NVR or server and leaving with it.
For even better protection, the enclosure should be securely mounted to the building structure and locked, rather than simply placed on the floor or on a shelf.
The goal is to make access to your recording and network equipment considerably more difficult and time consuming.
Protect the Evidence Behind Your Security System
Security cameras can record what happened, but the recordings themselves also need protection.
At NerdGuys Technologies Smart Systems, we install security cameras, NVR systems, networking equipment, structured cabling, server enclosures, and other smart security solutions for homes and businesses.
When designing a security system, we highly recommend considering a secure enclosed and lockable server or NVR box as part of the installation.
After all, protecting your property is important, but protecting the evidence of what happened can be just as important.
